Over the course of many years as a therapist, and before that as someone who had a successful career in the business world, I have long understood the importance of providing value. I strive to capture the concept of value in what I call the "So What?" question. What I mean by this might be best seen in the statement, "OK, terrific, I now know all this stuff about why I am feeling the way I feel and act the way I am acting... but, SO WHAT? ... what do I do with this stuff now?" The answer to that important question is in recognizing that self-understanding and insight empower us... they give us the power and the tools for us to make better choices.
Much like a captain sailing a ship along a fog-bound coast, the captain's ability to navigate safely and effectively is severely limited by the fog-shrouded waters and coastline. With tools like GPS, navigational charts, radar, and depth sounding devices, though, the captain has the information he or she needs to make the right moves. Insight and self-awareness can act like GPS and radar. They can provide necessary information for us to better understand the situation and where we stand so that we can see through the fog and make better choices.
My goal is to always put the client first and to provide caring, compassionate, competent, and professional support. I strive to help the client understand why they perceive the world a certain way, feel the way they do and act the way they do. This understanding enables the client to gain the ability to behave more mindfully and less on auto-pilot. The goal is for the client to have this self-awareness and the associated tools that will enable him or her (or them) to overcome the barriers previously experienced and that might have kept them from securing the joyful, contented, and satisfying life they desire. The therapist facilitates the conditions wherein the client can recognize, understand, and eliminate those barriers. This enables the client to naturally move toward a healthier state.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Certified Employee Assistance Counselor (CEAP). I work with individuals, couples, and families. I also provide consulting and training to organizations in areas such as team building, communication, group dynamics and relationships.
